Microhabitat selection by small mammals in response to fire

چکیده
Understanding how fire influences animal behaviour, such as movement and resource selection, is important for ecosystem management because it can improve our capacity to predict species will respond. We assessed microhabitat selection by two small mammals, the bush rat (Rattus fuscipes) agile antechinus (Antechinus agilis), in response a low intensity prescribed fire. used spool line tracking touch pole vegetation surveys quantify along 21 trails rats 22 antechinuses before after In unburnt areas, showed positive sedges, logs, habitat complexity, with further increasing burnt areas ferns, shrubs, complexity patches. Agile no significant or change Their lack of ground fires may be due, partially, their scansorial behaviour use tree hollows refuge sites. Strong patches suggests that even intensity, patchy planned burns impact high burn patchiness help persist recently areas. Future planning should consider both behavioural population responses animals

Microhabitat Selection by Small Mammals
Habitat selection is the process by which individuals choose among available habitat patches. Habitat availability” as how accessible and procurable physical and biological components of a habitat are to animals. Research on small mammal habitat use helps to broaden their knowledge. Small mammals are often used as an indicator species group to reflect some aspects of “integrity. Small mammal ab...
متن کاملA New Study Method of Microhabitat Structure of Small Mammals
The variables in habitat studies are usually transformed in such a way that they become abstractions and intuition is lost. We tested a new method for the analysis of habitat using data collected in a grid laid at the “restinga de Maricá”, in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Thirty-seven microhabitat variables were measured at each trap station. We assume that these variables characterize the micr...
متن کاملA device and standard variables to describe microhabitat structure of small mammals based on plant cover.
Studies quantifying habitat structure generally use several instruments. This paper aims to propose a new and efficient device to characterize microhabitat structure of small mammals. Seven measurements were taken: plant cover, litter cover, rock cover, canopy cover, and vegetative obstruction at three heights. The device is a 0.25 m2 square wooden frame (0.50 m x 0.50 m) divided in to 100 open...

Division of Wildlife Research, CSIRO, P.O. Box 84, Lyneham, A.C.T. 2602, Australia. Abstract: In Australia, eucalypt forests are the major vegetation form. They are highly fireprone, but also the major repository of the vertebrate fauna. Recent studies have demonstrated that the fauna, like the flora, may be adapted to fire. Simple divisions of environments into habitats satisfactorily predicte...
متن کاملAn Overview of Sex Selection at Conception in Mammals
Although the mechanisms under which sex ratio is controlled in nature remain unknown, researchers have attempted to treat sperm in an effort to predetermine the sex of the offspring. The methods of sperm separation that have been repeatedly reported to isolate fractions rich in X- or Y-chromosome bearing sperm are serum albumin gradient swim-up and flow cytometry. However, the ability of the se...
